Vehicle Identification Device (VID)

Secure data collection unit

The Vehicle Identification Device (VID) is a highly secure smart-card based vehicle identifier used for automatic capture of Level 3 data for fuel consumption monitoring.

The VID stores information such as the account number, registration number, fuel grade, and tank capacity of the vehicle. It has inputs for odometer and engine operating hours, an extended memory map and incorporates transaction counters. The tag is powered by the vehicle’s electrical supply.

  • The VID derives power from the vehicle’s battery and complies with all of the requirements for operation in hazardous fuel environments. For use in the mining environment, an engine disable feature is provided at time of refuel.
  • A Window-Mount Antenna connects to the VID to facilitate communication between the VID and the VIS Site Controller at the regional ISM-Band frequency.

The VID is available in different configurations to support your business requirements:

  • Standard VID – odometer input via VSS pulse or GPS, engine hour meter inputs, output and e-purse
  • OBD VID – odometer input via OBD, OBD protocols, engine hour meter and e-purse
